September Salads — A Harvest of God’s Character
As the air shifts toward autumn, and September brings the last fruits of summer, and the temps are dramatically lower, I find myself in the kitchen tossing together salads that taste like both sunshine and the promise of cooler days. Food is never just food—it can be a metaphor, haha, you know it, it’s a metaphor used as a reminder, and nourishment for both body and spirit. Each ingredient whispers something about the nature of God.
Lettuce – God’s Faithfulness
Every salad begins with a foundation. Crisp green leaves hold everything together. Like lettuce, God’s faithfulness is the bedrock of our lives—steady, abundant, dependable. No matter what we add or how the recipe changes, His steadfast love endures.
Tomatoes – God’s Generosity
Bright, juicy tomatoes burst with flavor. They remind me of the generosity of God—overflowing blessings, vibrant color, and nourishment that surprises us with sweetness in unexpected places.
Cucumbers – God’s Refreshment
Cool slices of cucumber bring balance to the plate. They mirror the refreshment God offers our weary souls. “He leads me beside still waters; He restores my soul.”
(Psalm 23:2–3).
Carrots – God’s Joy
Carrots add a cheerful crunch, a pop of orange that brightens the bowl. They remind us of the joy of the Lord, a joy that is not fleeting but rooted deeply in His presence.
Red Onion – God’s Wisdom
Onion brings a sharpness that wakes up every other flavor. God’s wisdom does the same. At times it stings, but when received, it enriches life with depth and clarity, sharpening our understanding of truth.
Olives – God’s Peace
Smooth, rich olives carry an ancient symbol of peace. Just as the dove carried an olive branch to Noah, so God carries peace into our storms. He calms the waters around us and within us.
Nuts & Seeds – God’s Strength and Hope
Scattered seeds or chopped nuts bring texture and strength to a salad. God is our stronghold, the One who provides what we need to stand firm and endure. But seeds also carry potential—tiny beginnings that grow into something far greater. When we share encouragement, kindness, or a prayer, we are planting seeds of hope in the lives of others. God waters those seeds, and in His timing, they bloom into harvests of grace and healing
Dressing – God’s Grace
Finally, the dressing binds it all together. Grace is the flavor that brings harmony to every part of life. Without grace, even the freshest ingredients would feel dry and disconnected. With grace, everything blends into wholeness.
A Prayer for the Table
Lord, as we gather in this September season, let our hearts be nourished by You. May we taste Your faithfulness, generosity, refreshment, joy, wisdom, peace, strength, and grace. Just as these salads bring life to our bodies, may Your Spirit bring life to our souls. In Your Holy Name we pray, Amen.
When you build your next salad this September, consider not just the vitamins or flavors, but the eternal truths God has layered into creation.
